    The Hague, September 2020…

Madurodam is a miniature park in The Hague. Famous Dutch sights, historic cities and major developments have been beautifully recreated here on a scale of 1:25. You can admire all the highlights of Amsterdam such as Dam Square, the Rijksmuseum, the beautiful Amsterdam canal houses and the Red-Light District. But also other cities and buildings such as the Royal Palace, Schiphol Airport, The Hague and Giethoorn.

The park opened in 1952 and has since been visited by tens of millions of visitors. Madurodam was named after George Maduro, a Dutch law student from Curaçao who fought the Nazi occupation forces as a member of the Dutch resistance and died at Dachau concentration camp in 1945.

The park also has a number of interactive attractions. All based on historical events such as New Amsterdam (discovery of the Dutch roots of the metropolis New York), the reclamation of the Haarlemmermeer and a unique flight through time and space with The Flying Dutchman.

And for those who want a unique keepsake, there is the possibility to have themselves transformed in 3D into digital and in real life. Madurodam is truly a park to see, do and experience for the little ones, the young ones and the not so young ones.

    Badhoevedorp, September 2020…

So nice to spend a day discovering new products and great initiatives. After a warm welcome at Corendon Village hotel Amsterdam we discovered unspoiled Dutch landscape just 30 minutes’ drive from Amsterdam on board the brand new boats of Rederij van Hulst with comfortable and corona proof flexible interior, high windows for panoramic view.

Sailing the Kaag Lake with traditional windmills and charming villages alongside, great food and drinks with lovely sunshine. What do you want more? Did you know that Rederij van Hulst also operate boat tours through the tulip fields (in season), are working on an Amsterdam harbor tour with technical visits and are flexible to cater to any special request. Thank you Nico Schilder for the invite.

Upon return we discovered the Corendon Village Hotel Amsterdam which (very clever) they turned into an all inclusive resort to offer clients a full holiday experience including cinema, spa & wellness, entertainment and various bars and restaurants and as a highlight a tour in the original Boeing 747 parked in their backyard. Did you know that Corendon also has a beach club in Zandvoort and that they have plans expending with another hotel?  Thank you Juliën van Nimwegen, Emiel de Groot, Floris Beltman and Sven Rakers for your hospitality and great day!

For more info about these venues or for a tailor made holiday program, please get in touch and hopefully we can meet in private soon.

    Zeeland, August 2020…

Chef Jannis Brevet and his wife Claudia opened in 2001 their lovely estate in the province of Zeeland, located in the southwest of the Netherlands, on a peninsula bordering Belgium. Zeeland is one of the least populated provinces. Surrounded as it is by highly fertile soil and sea, Zeeland shines with its number of Michelin starred restaurants (7 restaurants with 11 Michelin stars in total). Succulent oysters, delicious crabs and an abundance of seafood result in a culinary haven in an unspoiled and off the beaten path environment.

The Dutchman had the pleasure to enjoy an 8-course lunch, which included sublime, surprising and perfectly balanced flavor combinations. No culinary tricks but utter perfection. Claudia and her team were so welcoming, creating the perfect ambiance to enjoy this culinary feast. Sommelier Geert Rutten perfectly matched the wines to our taste and went out of his way when we asked for a different red wine to pair with the perfectly cooked fillet of Lamb. From the 3 appetizers the rose water flavored beetroot with pineapple stood out in finesse and taste. We started lunch with a brandade of turbot with caviar served in a porcelain egg, followed by striking presentation of 3 pétoncles (mini coquilles). The next course was a signature dish of Chef Jannis and to me the sensation of this lunch, served in 2 preparations. A bowl of Duck foie gras (bio) with old port reduction covered with a foam of popcorn and parmesan and a tray with an apple and passion fruit compote to soften the pallet with sesame seeds brioche bread and a delightful smooth foie gras mousse with a parmesan cheese cream. The 3 oysters in 3 preparations created a nice freshness before the perfectly cooked lemon sole with sweet koji sauce and refreshing ponzu. Can it get better than this?

Yes, for sure. Next was pure art and cuisine, mouthwatering Zeeland lamb inspired by Alexander Calder’s minimalistic and closing off with boeddha vingers and a tompouce with olive oil ice cream (yum yum yum). Coffee and sweets were served in the tranquil garden and we visited one of the elegant and spacious suites of the Manoir where will certainly stay next time. Thank you so much Jannis, Claudia and the whole team for this authentic, elegant and unforgettable gastronomic experience.

Since 2018, Manoir Inter Scaldes is decorated with 3 Michelin stars and ranked as the best gourmet restaurant in the Netherlands. Mind you, there are only two 3-star Michelin restaurants in the Netherlands. Do you want to experience this highlight for culinary lovers when visiting Holland? The Hague, October 2019…

What can I possibly say about Hotel Des Indes other than I really love everything about this hotel. First of all, the location at the Lange Voorhout; within walking distance from the Mauritshuis and Museum Escher, but also the Parliaments building, Noordeinde Palace and many fine dine restaurants and luxury shopping streets. Secondly the history of the hotel; build in 1858 for Baron Van Brienen (the advisor of King Willem III). Did you know that in those day you could enter the hotel with your horse and carriage?

But mostly of course because of the grandeur of the hotel. Just look at the pictures. The beautiful stylish restaurant, the marble pillars, the beautiful chandeliers and the rooms are so warmly decorated and the beds are amazing. Fit for a King and a Queen. And so is their service. No wonder they were chosen to become one of the 400 most exclusive and specials hotels in the world, so called ‘Leading Hotels of the World’.

    Amsterdam, October 2019…

The Embassy of the Free Mind is a Dutch museum, a library and a platform for free thinking, inspired by the ideas of the Bibliotheca Philosophica Hermetica collection. The museum focuses on the European free thinking of the past 2000 years, inspired by hermetic wisdom: insight into the relationship between God, cosmos and man.

The Bibliotheca Philosophica Hermetica was established in 1958 as the private library of the Amsterdam businessman Joost Ritman. In 1984 the library moved to the Bloemstraat in Amsterdam and became accessible to the public. Ritman brought together manuscripts and printed books in the field of hermetic tradition under one roof, thus ensuring that the coherence between the various collection areas and their relevance for today became visible.

In 2017, the library moved to the 17th-century national monument on the Keizersgracht, the Huis met de Hoofden (House with the Heads), and obtained museum status, resulting in the Embassy of the Free Mind. The canal house was built in 1622 by Hendrick de Keyser and belongs to the “Top 100 of the National Service for the Protection of Monuments”. Six heads adorn the facade. They depict the Roman gods Apollo, Ceres, Mercury, Minerva, Bacchus and Diana. The museum has a collection of more than 25,000 works on hermetics, rose cruisers, alchemy, mysticism, gnosis, western esotericism and religious studies.

Rotterdam: the city of modern architecture

City Rotterdam The Dutchman Travelagent Travel concierge The Netherlands DMC IMG_0315 Euromast Rotterdam Erasmusbrug rotterdam Rotterdam, April 2019…
Rotterdam is a major port city in the Dutch province of South Holland. Known for its Erasmus University, riverside setting, lively cultural life and maritime heritage. The near-complete destruction of the city center in the World War II Rotterdam Blitz has resulted in a varied architectural landscape, including sky-scrapers (an uncommon sight in other Dutch cities) designed by renowned architects such as Rem Koolhaas, Piet Blom and Ben van Berkel.

When visiting Rotterdam, you definitely have to see and or visit these highlights like the cube houses. high density housing with sufficient space on the ground level, since its main purpose is to optimize the space inside. The Euromast, a tv tower offering 360-degree views. The Erasmusbrug, a combined cable-stayed and bascule bridge, connecting the north and south parts of this city, second largest in the Netherlands. Kunsthal (Art hall) designed by the Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas. No permanent collection but a wide range of temporary exhibits. The large space allows various exhibits in parallel. The range of exhibitions presented at the Kunsthal ranges from 20th century masters to current contemporary art movements. The Port of Rotterdam, the largest port in Europe. From 1962 until 2004 it was the world’s busiest port, now overtaken first by Singapore and then Shanghai. And last but not least the Markthal, a residential and office building with a market hall underneath.

Haarlem is a city outside of Amsterdam in the northwest Netherlands. Once a major North Sea trading port surrounded by a defensive wall, it retains its medieval character of cobblestone streets and gabled houses. It’s the center of a major flower-bulb-growing district, and famous for its outlying tulip fields, art museums and hofjes (almshouses built around leafy courtyards).

When visiting Holland, you should definitely consider visiting this beautiful, interesting and historical city also. Not only during the tulip season when the Tulp Mania is brought back to live, but also in light of the 2019 celebration year of the Golden age (17th century). A period of great wealth for the Dutch Republic, when due to the East India Company trade blossomed. This rich history is still visible in the many mansions, canals, churches and city walls but also the art and science blossomed. Special expositions will take place in the Frans Hals museum and the Teylers museum throughout the year.

    Weesp /Amstelveen, May 2018…
Just 15 minutes from Amsterdam you can discover a lovely little village called Weesp, where you will find this beautiful old windmill ‘De Vriendschap’ (The Fiendship) located on the banks of the river Vecht. With the help of the wind, ecological grains produce flour for delicious bread and mixes for pancakes the traditional way. A totally different experience of course in comparison with windmill city Zaanse Schans, but it is the personal touch and stories of 19-year-old miller Suzanne that makes this visit special.

Also, worth a visit in April and May is the beautiful Tea garden. Small but nice and intimate with a lot of varieties of flowers and plants.

Combine this with a visit to the winery Amsteltuin (Amstel garden) where Jan Schake and Tieke Roosen have their vineyard since 2006 in Amstelveen (a village nearby). Special cultivated grape varieties, like Pinotin, Souvignier gris, Solaris and Johanniter has made it possible to create quality wines in our cool weather climate. Over the years Jan and Tieke have devoted their live and passion not only to make amazing Dutch wines but also provide an inspiring environment for older forgetful or slightly demented people in their day-care pavilion.

If you want to know more about these off the beaten track visits, or want a tailor-made proposal? Get in touch.

You can actually do that in the village of Nuenen at a bit more than 1-hour drive from Amsterdam! Van Gogh lived here from 1883 till 1885. In retrospect, his time there was one of the most important and most productive periods of his life: 195 paintings, including the ‘Potato Eaters’, 313 drawings, 25 water colors and 19 sketches in his letters.

Vincent loved the surroundings and the people. He diligently worked in his studio producing studies of typical Brabant residents, but he also went out into the countryside and painted landscapes. He was particularly inspired by the effects of color.

In December 1883, Vincent moved in with his parents. Vincent’s father was the parson of the Dutch Reformed church in Nuenen, whose congregation numbered about a hundred. Vincent painted the church for his mother, who was in bed with a broken thigh bone. It was Margaretha “Margot” Begemann (Vincent’s neighbor) who took over the sewing lessons Mrs. Van Gogh usually gave. During this period, Vincent and Margot fell in love, and he even proposed marriage. In May 1884, Vincent worked on several mill paintings. One was of the water mill at Kollen, which he passed on his walks through the area.

All these fascinating stories can be discovered during a walk through the lovely village and actually walk in the footsteps of Vincent. Get in touch and we will make the necessary arrangements for you to walk in Vincent’s shoes.

    Amsterdam, March 2018…
A dream has come true for entrepreneur and awarded hotelier Mr. Eric Toren. The creation of the ultimate luxury hide-away right in the very heart of the city of Amsterdam. Boutique is a much-used term these days, but with only 16 lavishly decorated suites, Intuitive butler service, wine cabinets in every suite and a fine dining restaurant, Hotel TwentySeven really hits the mark. 100% Sound proof windows allow you to unwind and immerse in utter luxury.

The pictures are spectacular but when visited I was impressed about the atmosphere and design felt like a warm blanket. A bit over the top maybe, but very sophisticated. More idyllic is hard to imagine! Just a stone’s throw from Amsterdam. Surrounded by water and swaying reeds, you will find a culinary oasis: Restaurant Tante Kee (Auntie Kee). This restaurant has been one of my favorites for many years now. I’ve been here with family, friends but also clients that wanted to experience the unbeatable outdoor dining at the waterside.

What makes this restaurant so special is that it’s on an island and that it started as a grocery store where ‘Kee’ baked such tasty pancakes for her children that skippers specially docked to enjoy them. During summertime you can enjoy the lakes and the beautiful rural Dutch landscape by boat in combination with the hospitality and delicious food, served by leading lady Kim Edwards and chef Raymond Reeb.

A hidden gem not to be missed. If you are in for a gastronomic experience overlooking the Kagerplassen (the lake)? Get in touch and we’ll make a tailor-made program for you to enjoy Restaurant Auntie Kee and all the beauty Holland has to offer.

    Amsterdam, January 2018…

Always a pleasure to meet up with Mrs. Brita Röhl of Hotel Seven One Seven and no wonder they got awarded by Gault & Millau as Winner hotel of the Year in 2017. The service and individually designed suites is all about personal detail to attention and hospitality to make you feel at home. A perfect match with the philosophy of The Dutchman. The proof I got first hand from a guest, an architect who had clearly travelled the world. He joined us in the lounge for a coffee and raved about the staff and the eye for details in the suites and that he was planning already his next visit back at the Hotel Seven One Seven. If you are looking for an intimate personal hide away for your stay in Amsterdam, this is the place to stay.

    Amsterdam, December 2017…
There is a growing demand for comfortable apartments, to feel like a local, away from the tourist center and avoiding steep staircases and tiny rooms. The Wittenberg opened its doors on December 4th after a complete renovation in a distinguished building dating back to 1722, alongside the New Keizersgracht canal. An urban retreat of comfort with contemporary Dutch design mixed with the authentic character of the beautiful indoor and outdoor spaces. The totally 115 apartments offer a wide choice of studios, one, two bedrooms and even 3 bedrooms mezzanine apartments, which is quite unique in Amsterdam. All easy accessible with wide corridors and spacious living spaces.

Located in a peaceful residential area close to the zoo and botanical gardens, within walking distance from the bustling city center, Wittenberg provides you the freedom to unplug and enjoy the convenience of your home away from home. If you are looking for a hassle free, comfortable and secure stay in a typical Amsterdam atmosphere for a minimum of 7 nights, this is the place to stay. Fresh vegetables and honest food is what restaurant Vermeer is all about. Choose between a 4, 5 or 6 course surprising menu, honoring seasonal ingredients with rich flavors, aroma’s and creativity. I enjoyed the caramelized brussels sprouts, beetroot tartare and the coquilles served with an oven-baked bread crust surrounding the shell. Delicious and spectacular!

Vermeer has recently been redecorated. And they did a marvelous job. Contemporary with warm green and soft colors, matching philosophy of the kitchen. A spacious set up with an elegant cocktail lounge and two dining rooms with a lot of privacy. Definitely a recommendation if you’re looking for a romantic evening full of surprising umami.

But what I love most is the way chef Naylor presents his vegetables: unique, surprising and full of flavor. Get in touch for a stylish dinner evening with friendly service and amazing dishes.
